It's What You Don't Say

by Jill Crossland

There is usually at least one in the room. You find yourself inadvertently watching them as they move from group to group with ease. You think to yourself "That woman over there looks so confident; I wonder what business she is in?" She has captured your attention and all without saying a word.

For some business women this is seemingly effortless; their image to the world is one of professionalism and success. Paying the bills, child care issues, deciding which ad will give you best value for the money, don't seem to be on their minds or is it?

The confidence you feel in your business and in yourself as a business woman is not just reflected by what you say or your written presentations.

So how well do you represent your business before you speak?

FIVE KEY AREAS THAT WILL HAVE PEOPLE NOTICING YOU

  1. THEIR FIRST IMPRESSION

You only get one chance to make a first impression. It doesn't matter if you are entering a room full of strangers, giving a presentation or speech or walking around the grocery store, appear calm and confident. Remember your mother's words,' don't slough, shoulders back, hold your head up'; it is still good advice.

  2. THE ART OF SHAKING HANDS

Women are often not comfortable with this but it can be powerful.

At a social or business event when you meet someone face to face; shake hands and introduce yourself; it is a strong instant connection. It also gets you noticed and remembered; you don't disappear into the crowd.

When you are in the position of having to ask for help; such as applying for a bank loan, take a deep breath, shake hands and smile. You will at least appear confident.

If you run across someone in the course of your business that you feel isn't treating you with due respect; next time you meet them or go into their office - move confidently toward them with hand outstretched, looked them in the eye and say "Hello Bob, good to see you again." I guarantee that will shift the relationship dynamics.

  3. THE POWER OF LISTENING

Ethical business people are always interested in what others are saying. When people are talking to you, give them your full attention, don't interrupt or let your eyes wander.

    When You Do Speak:
Before replying, take a breath; let a second of silence go by while you gather your thoughts. Respond clearly and with confidence. Don't say too much; being concise is much more interesting than someone who rambles on.

  4. YOUR APPEARANCE

    Clothes Make the 'Woman':
For home based business women this often means finding something between the suit and the sweats. When you have found the style that is right for you, keep it current with up-to-date color choices, make-up and accessories. This is especially important when meeting new clients or business associates. If you look dull or old fashioned you give the same impression about your business.

Always maintain your business look during business hours. You will be more productive and not be caught off guard when running errands or if any unscheduled client shows up.

If you have a business with a lot of physical work, create your own uniform but with panache. Choose a consistent colour combination for top and pants; consider getting tops, blouses or t-shirts with you company name on them.

  5. YOUR PLACE OF BUSINESS

Take time to stand in the doorway of your business or office; look at it through the eyes of a stranger. Does it look old fashioned, untidy or run down?

Change and upgrades don't have to be expensive. Consider new paint (don't be afraid of colour), framed posters, REAL plants, bookcases, different lighting, if children are a part of you business put toys in fun, bright containers. (Stores like Ikea have some great storage solutions).

Check out the big guys/ the upper echelon in your business field. From their business cards, advertising, work space to their web sites; big business can afford to hire the best for every phase of their development. They are a good source for new ideas and provide a gateway to monitor the growth and changes in your industry.

A confident and professional image will get you noticed in today's competitive world and make your business the one that people want to hire, work with, talk to or buy from. Always remember though; it is important to feel comfortable with your choices and to maintain your own sense of style and individuality as that also goes a long way towards the making of a successful business.
